I am concerned my child isn’t making progress who should I contact?

Your first port of call should always be you child’s learning mentor.

I think my child may have Dyslexia who should I contact?

Before investigating dyslexia it’s important to get your child’s hearing and vision checked. If everything is ok with both hearing and vision speak to your child’s learning mentor who can refer your child to the SEND department.

My child finds reading difficult because words are moving on the page or they complain there is a glare.

Make an appointment with an eye care professional (e.g. optometrist) who can check there isn’t a concern with their vision. Please inform the SEND department of any diagnosis/recommendations made by the professional.

My child finds learning (literacy and/or numeracy) difficult.

Speak to your child’s learning mentor who can refer your child to the SEND department.

I think my child may have autism.

If concerns are only seen at home then make an appointment with your GP to discuss your concerns who will potentially make a referral to the umbrella pathway. If concerns are seen at both home and school then speak to your child’s learning mentor who can refer your child to the SEND department.

I think my child may have ADHD.

Before exploring an ADHD referral, Worcestershire insist that one of the following classes have been attended and strategies consistently implemented for 10 weeks before the referral process can begin.

I think my child may have Dyspraxia.

Speak to your GP who can make a referral to the correct service.

I think my child would benefit from additional arrangements in exams.

Speak to your child’s learning mentor who can refer your child to the SEND department.

My child’s first language isn’t English and they’re struggling to access the curriculum

What is the difference between the SEN register and AN register?

If your child is on the SEN register then this means that they have a special educational needs that needs support above what is ordinarily available. If they are on the AN (additional needs) register then this means that they may have a diagnosis or a need but with a few adjustments that are ordinarily available they are making expected progress.

My child is on the SEN register, will they always be on it?

No, the SEN register is regularly updated. If your child is making expected progress with minimal intervention then they will be moved to the AN register to monitor. If it becomes apparent at any point that they are no longer making expected progress and need increased support then they will be moved back onto the SEN register. You will be sent a letter if your child is put on the SEN register. You can check the SEN status of your child on the SEN tab on edulink.

My child is struggling with their mental health.

There are a wealth of services available (Reach for wellbeing, Kooth, Calm Harm) if they haven’t worked speak to your GP as they may have a mental health practitioner who can help or refer to CAMHS if appropriate.
