Introduction to the EMAB
Welcome to the The Beacon EMAB at Christopher Whitehead Language College. Our EMAB offers a unique and supportive environment tailored to the individual needs of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), helping them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our Approach
At the heart of The Beacon is a bespoke and ambitious curriculum, designed to foster academic achievement while nurturing personal development. We aim to provide our students with a meaningful and engaging learning experience, focused on their strengths, needs, and interests.
Our curriculum is complemented by autism-focused interventions to support communication, social skills, emotional regulation, and independence. These interventions are carefully structured to help students develop vital life skills and enable them to engage with their learning in ways that work best for them.
Our Team
The Beacon is staffed by highly trained and experienced professionals who specialise in autism education. With a high student-to-staff ratio, we ensure that every student receives the attention and support they need to succeed. Our staff work collaboratively with each student and their family through keyworking to create a personalised learning plan that aligns with their goals.
Admission Criteria
Places at the EMAB Beacon are allocated by the Local Authority. There is a very high level of demand for our twelve EMAB Beacon places.
When a student place becomes available, the Local Authority will send an EHCP consultation to the EMAB Beacon. The EMABCo will respond to state whether the Beacon can meet the needs of the student. As part of the process of determining whether need can be met, the EMABCo will invite the student to visit the Beacon with their family/carers.
To limit the disruption to our students, we do not offer visits to families before an EHCP consultation has been sent by the LA to the Beacon. There is no waiting list for the EMAB Beacon. Places are determined exclusively through the EHCP consultation process.
If you think that a place at the EMAB Beacon might fulfil the provision as stated in the EHCP, then please contact your SEND Case Worker in the first instance to discuss whether sending an EHCP consultation to the Beacon would be appropriate.
